How can we train AI to design using our design system
AI is accelerating our design workflows. It allows us to prototype and iterate on our designs more quickly. But speed alone isn’t always valuable—especially in mature products where consistency, brand alignment, and usability matter most. What if we could train AI to design using our design system? Instead of relying on AI for generic or exploratory outputs, we could guide it with our established design language—components, styles, patterns, and rules.

The Opportunity
Exploring how AI can design with our design system - and it's starting to work
I have tried something simple but powerful. I created a baseline design system in a V0 chat, adding key foundations:
- Colors
- Typography
- Buttons & Inputs
- Spacing
- Icons
Then I forked a new V0 chat using that as a 'template'. In the new chat, I asked AI to build a dashboard for our product - using only the baseline design system set up in V0.
The result - a working UI Artefact using our tokens, component, and visual language. It's pretty basic for now, but it's consistent. It's fast. And it's aligned.
Maybe, the future of design isn’t just AI-generated—it's system-informed and designer-guided.
Still early in the process—but the potential is exciting
